Casting molds and their common types

Author:

Casting molds are a common process in industrial manufacturing. According to Baidu Baike, it refers to the process of obtaining the structural shape of a part by first making the structural shape of the part with other easily moldable materials, and then placing the mold into a sand mold. This creates a cavity in the sand mold that matches the dimensions of the part. Liquid material is then poured into this cavity, and after cooling and solidifying, a part is formed that is identical in shape to the mold.
So what types of casting molds are there?
1. Forging molds: Similar to casting, forging is one of the most commonly used processing techniques for producing parts. Forging molds mainly include: die forging and large press forging dies, spiral press forging dies, flat forging dies, roller forging dies, etc. Additionally, fastener cold heading dies, extrusion molds, wire drawing molds, and liquid forging molds also belong to forging molds.
2. Stamping molds: Also known as punching dies, stamping molds are used in cold stamping processing to shape materials into parts. This type of mold mainly includes cutting dies, bending molds, stretching molds, single-process molds, compound punching dies, progressive stamping dies, as well as automotive body stamping dies, combination stamping dies, and motor silicon steel sheet stamping dies.
3. Plastic forming molds: Due to the widespread use of plastics in daily life, plastic forming is also a very common processing material in the industrial field. Therefore, to process plastics, there are plastic forming molds: compression molding molds, extrusion molds, injection molds, thermosetting plastic injection molds, extrusion forming foaming molds, low-tooling foaming injection molding molds, and blow molding molds all belong to plastic forming molds.
4. Metal casting molds: This type of mold is somewhat similar to die-casting molds but focuses more on casting; it is used for various metal parts during casting.
5. Die-casting molds: Castings are one of the more common types of parts produced in manufacturing. The main types of die-casting molds include hot chamber die-casting machine molds, horizontal cold chamber die-casting machine molds, vertical cold chamber die-casting machine molds, all-vertical die-casting machine molds, non-ferrous metal die-casting molds, and ferrous metal die-casting molds.
6. Powder metallurgy molding dies: Powder metallurgy molding dies are relatively complex and mainly include: manual dies, mechanical dies, unidirectional and bidirectional pressing dies for sleeves, floating pressing dies for sleeves, and shaping dies. Among these types, there are also subordinate classifications; for example, manual dies include radial shaping dies, full shaping dies with external steps for sleeves, and shaping dies with spherical components.
7. Glass product molds: Molds for glass products are mainly classified according to processing forms; the former includes forming bottle and jar molds while the latter includes glassware molds.
8. Rubber forming molds: These are the molds used for processing rubber and mainly include rubber compression molds, rubber extrusion molds, and injection molds.
9. Ceramic molds: Metal forming molds used for various ceramic products such as utensils.
10. Economic molds (simple molds): These are also commonly used processing molds by small enterprises due to their cost-effectiveness; hence they are very popular. This type of mold mainly includes low-melting-point alloy forming molds, thin plate punching dies, layered punching dies, silicone rubber molds, epoxy resin molds, ceramic precision casting molds.
